Join the U.S. Capitol Historical Society for an engaging presentation with Dr. Todd Arrington, Director of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum, centered on General Eisenhower’s report to Congress after World War II ended in Europe.
On June 18, 1945, General Eisenhower delivered a report on the war before a joint session of Congress in the House of Representatives. General Eisenhower had recently returned to the United States from his active-duty service in Europe, where he led the Allied Forces as Supreme Commander. Congress welcomed the war hero home with thunderous applause.
In his report, Eisenhower applauded the leadership of late President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. He recognized the contributing efforts of the U.S. Navy and Air Force, as well as the militaries of several countries, including Britain and the Soviet Union. He commended “The American fighting man,” highlighting the outstanding performance of American soldiers as well as the heavy losses they bore.
