Congressional Briefing: Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
2021 marks 100 years since the creation of, and first interment in, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. During this webinar, Gavin McIlvenna, President & Public Affairs Chair, Society of the Honor Guard, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, spoke about ways to mark this important anniversary in your community. Jane Campbell, President and CEO of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society, also discussed Congress’ role in the creation of the tomb.

Congressional Premier: We the People Constitution Tour Hub
The USCHS hosted a special Congressional Premier event for our We the People Constitution Tour Hub. The Society spent the better part of the last year collaborating with the Capitol Visitors Center, the White House Historical Association, the National Parks Service and the National Archive developing this free and open-access hub for civics education resources so that teachers around the country can find all of these digital learning resources in one place. Indeed, teachers can use the Hub to bring their students on a virtual tour of our Capital City. The event features remarks from U.S. Sens. Amy Klobuchar, Roy Blunt, and Ben Cardin, along with U.S. Reps. Liz Cheney, Virginia Foxx, Byron Donalds, and Barbara Lee, together with a demonstration of the hub and several of its video resources.

As our nation continues to grapple with the January 6th attack on the United States Capitol Building – and American democracy itself – the U.S. Capitol Historical Society convened a panel of renowned academics and public figures on January 27th, 2021 to help us make sense of what took place. President/CEO Jane Campbell moderated a discussion between former Senator and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, Yale University historian Dr. Joanne B. Freeman, and Emory University political scientist Dr. Andra Gillespie as they examined the historical context, societal realities, and geopolitical impacts of this tragic event.

Special Webinar to Discuss the Tragic Events of 1/6/21
The nation is only beginning to process the shock of January 6th’s storming of the U.S. Capitol. After serious consideration, we decided to proceed with our scheduled webinar with Derek W. Black, the Ernest F. Hollings Chair in Constitutional Law at the University of South Carolina. USCHS President and CEO Jane Campbell joined Black for a discussion of topics giving legal and historic context to the extraordinary events of today, including the importance of an educated citizenry and the rule of law.
