In Memoriam: Corinne “Lindy” Boggs, 1916-2013

Corinne “Lindy” Boggs, 1916-2013

The United States Capitol Historical Society joins in mourning the passing of former Congresswoman and Ambassador Corinne “Lindy” Boggs on July 27, 2013. In addition to serving as the first woman elected to Congress from Louisiana from 1973 to 1991 and as U.S. ambassador to the Holy See (1997-2001), Lindy Boggs served for several years as a member of the board of trustees of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society.

Boggs was the widow of former Majority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives Hale Boggs, and the mother of three children: broadcast journalist Cokie Roberts, Washington, D.C. lawyer Thomas Hale Boggs, Jr., and the late Barbara Boggs Sigmund, a mayor of Princeton, New Jersey.

The USCHS recognized Lindy Boggs’ lifetime achievement in public service by awarding her the organization’s 2001 Freedom Award.
