On February 28, 2012, the Congress dedicated a marker in the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center to commemorate the role of enslaved labor in building the “Temple of Democracy.” The marker, a block of original Aquia Creek sandstone from the Capitol’s East Portico, was authorized by a Concurrent Resolution of Congress and represents an important step in how the story of the Capitol Building is told.
